Everything is free! And no, everything must not go! But, for sure a few items are up for grabs!
What did you do for Mother’s Day?
I spent a part of the afternoon “shopping” at my mom’s house. My amazing mom, Mary Jane, is 81 years young. And although she is not planning on going anywhere anytime soon, she is starting to realize that she has accumulated a lot of things over those 81 years – never mind the fact that she has been in the same home for the last 45!
I am lucky enough not to have had to go through the process of cleaning out a loved one’s home after their passing. My mom has, and remarkably I believe that is where part of her motivation comes from. But there is a whole positive inspiration as well.
Here is what my mom said about the experience that she created and facilitated:
“Want to spend an afternoon reminiscing, laughing, sharing, and reducing the accumulation of years of purchases without filling in the landfill? Invite your children to tag-sale shop in your collection of former must-haves!
Whether you are thinking of downsizing, moving to a new home or just trying to sort and clear out years of accumulation, this is a great activity!
I cannot think of a better way to celebrate some family time, and this year, it’s exactly how we spent Mother’s Day afternoon. From the practical to the whimsical, my daughters and granddaughters shopped for coffee mugs. serving pieces, cloth napkins, patio pillows, costume jewelry, clothing, purses and more. Whatever didn’t get selected was taken to a thrift shop.
For so many reasons and in so many ways, this was one of the easiest, most fun, productive, satisfying, and climate friendly activities I have done thus far.”

And it was fun, and silly!
We reminisced and shared stories! And we all walked away with pieces that, just the mere act of holding them, bring happy memories. Memories where my mom is in the forefront! Now too, we will forever be reminded of a giggly participatory party centered around my mom disposing and simultaneously gifting her “extras” with everyone’s individualism present, but first and foremost, the feeling of family.
