You’re in the right place! 🌎💪
Have you been thinking, “I want to help the Earth, but I don’t know what to do!” Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. My teenage daughter and I wrote a book called “A Kid’s Guide to Climate Activism” because we believe kids (and families!) can make a real difference. We’ve packed it with fun ideas and simple actions you can take to help protect the planet.
Let’s start with some simple science that’ll make you sound like a climate pro. 🌱
In the United States, the average person creates about 15 metric tons of carbon pollution every year. That’s a lot! But here’s the thing, it’s not just “carbon.” What people really mean is carbon dioxide, or CO2, and even more accurately, they mean carbon dioxide equivalent, or CO2e (which includes other polluting gases too, like methane and nitrous oxide).
Sound confusing? It kind of is! But here’s the cool part: when you learn this stuff, you can explain it to your friends, your parents, and even your teachers. The more we all understand it, the more we can do to fix it.
Greenhouse gases like CO2, methane, and nitrous oxide trap heat in our atmosphere and cause the planet to warm up. That’s what’s behind climate change, and why your actions matter. If we can all work collectively to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, then we can make a positive impact on climate change and help to improve the health of our planet. So, let’s learn a little, do a lot, and show the world how kids can lead the way! 🌟
You + Earth = A Powerful Team 🌍💥
All over the world, scientists are coming up with awesome inventions and smart ideas to help slow down climate change. But guess what? You don’t have to be a scientist to help the planet. In fact, what you do every day matters more than you might think.
Even though people are taking action, Earth is still getting warmer. That’s because there are just too many greenhouse gases floating around in our atmosphere. It’s like the planet is stuck under a giant, heavy blanket. ☀️ The sun’s rays come in, but that blanket traps the heat and doesn’t let it escape.
Here’s the cool part: If we each shrink our carbon footprint, even just a little, we can help lift some of the weight of that blanket. If everyone in the U.S. lowered their emissions from 15 metric tons to 10 or less, we’d make a HUGE difference together.
And that’s why you’re here, right? You want to help. So, let’s jump into it with some specific ideas! 💚
🛍 Buy Less, Choose Better
Think before you shop! Do you really need that new thing? Or can you borrow, trade, or find it secondhand?
- Ask for experiences (like a day at the zoo or a cooking class) instead of stuff for birthdays or holidays.
- When you do get something, take awesome care of it – and pass it on when you’re done.
- You can even call yourself a young minimalist – someone who chooses to live with less to help the planet.
🥤 Bring Your Reusable Bottle
Plastic bottles = big polluters.
Bring a reusable bottle wherever you go. Keep one in your backpack so it’s always handy. Bonus: You’ll look like a total eco-pro when you take out your reusable bottle.
🙅♀️ Refuse Single-Use
Single-use items are things you use once and toss – like plastic sandwich bags, napkins, straws, and juice boxes.
Here’s what you can do:
- Use cloth napkins and real utensils.
- Pack your lunch in a reusable box or container.
- Say “no thanks” to straws (or bring your own metal or silicone one).
Challenge: Can you go a whole day without using anything disposable? Try it and tell your friends!
🥦 Eat More Plants
What you eat makes a difference too!
- Eating less meat and more vegetables helps lower pollution from animal farming.
- Try helping your family do Meatless Mondays – or come up with your own creative name (Tofu Tuesdays? Veggie Soup Sunday?)
- Want to take the lead? Find a fun recipe, help cook dinner, and show your family how tasty climate action can be.
✨ Bonus Ideas for Planet Heroes
- Ride your bike, walk, or carpool instead of always driving.
- Plant something! A tree, flowers, or even veggies in a pot.
- Talk about climate action at school, maybe even start a green club, or plan a clean-up day!
- Learn more and teach others – because knowledge is power.
You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to start. And by reading this, you already have. 🌱💫
